Sunday Scan – Al Milgrom

KP-W-LS-01

Time for another edition of Sunday Scan. Today’s cover is 1984’s Kitty Pryde & Wolverine #1. This Marvel Limited series featured Wolverine’s demonic enemy Ogun. Kitty undergoes some serious training both mental and physical and by the end of this mini-series she’s as much of a Ninja as she is a super-hero. Milgrom’s pencil work may lack the detail of other artists but his honest simplicity had a clean animated style that was always fun & appealing. He also had a nice grasp of human anatomy. Notice how his Kitty Pryde actually looks like a petite young teen-age girl -not a porn-star. Hundreds of other comic-artists would do well to follow his example!

Sunday Scan – Michael Golden

PPSP-A-2001

It’s Sunday Morning at the Hobbit Hole and that means it’s time for the Sunday Scan. Every Sunday I will scan and post a new comic-book cover from my collection. I’m doing it in a format I call “HQ-3000”. These are HUGE and the pixel height of the image will always be 3,000. This week’s cover is by the incomparable Michael Golden! This is from Marvel’s Peter Parker: Spider-Man 2001 Annual (2001). I love the intensity of this one and the sense of movement. The story is set in Peter Parker’s High School days and Michael Golden really nailed the look of the slightly thinner less muscle-bound (more Ditko than Romita) Spider-Man. Impressive detail.

Sunday Scan – Don Perlin

MS-28

Time for another Sunday Scan. This cover scan is Marvel Spotlight #28 (1976). The art is by Don Perlin. This issue is the first solo appearance of Doug Moench’s enigmatic Moon Knight character. Once dismissed simply as Marvel’s answer to Batman, Moon Knight was later (in his own series in 1980) revealed to be a very original concept with multiple personalities/identities and a quasi-mystical origin. He is one of my all-time favorite characters and this issue with it’s bold iconic cover holds a special place for me on a personal level. One of my earliest comic collecting memories dates back to sometime in the late 70’s when I was a little kid. My Aunt Dee took me to a little “Junk Shop” that was walking distance from her house. I remember the store having a hodgepodge of unrelated used items from old radios to romance paperbacks and of course comics. Oddly enough painted on the glass in front was the words: “Pyramid Electronics”. Anyway she let me pick out a pile of comics from a 10 cent box. Most of these comic-books were a few years old and among them I managed to find some real gems including several Werewolf By Night issues and this Marvel Spotlight.
