069-New Avengers-59-Stuart Immonen

Number 69:

New Avengers #59 (Marvel – 2009)

Cover art by Stuart Immonen

I love this cover for many reasons. The pose is terrific with their backs against one another. It also has this breathless tension…they seem desperate. You can almost hear them breathing hard…I imagine Spider-Man gasping for enough breath to utter a one liner. They look pretty beaten and down-right scared as they are surrounded by a hoard of super-villains (just visible in the background). I should also mention the excellent coloring and tight ink-work – it almost looks like animation. It’s just perfect.

Check back tomorrow night for another scan from the count-down of my Top 100 favorite comic book covers.

  1. Good cover. They’ve clearly been fighting for a while already, and they’re getting ready for the next round.

  2. It’s a good one and I love the dimension of Stuart in his drawings. But (because there’s always a but) it’s sad that you have no dust, no blood… The whole thing is just too clean. How can you imagine a terrible fight without goin’ dirty?
