096-Rogue-01-Rodolfo Migliari

Number 96:

Rogue #1 (Marvel – 2004)

Cover art by Rodolfo Migliari

This cover to issue #1 of the 2004 Rogue series is one of my favorites for a few reasons – the cheese-cake factor is only a SMALL PART -no really! It doesn’t hurt that her face bears a more than fair resemblance to Avril Lavigne (yes I like Avril -although music-wise I like her pre-party-girl stuff more). The flowing hair is interesting as is all the real looking folds and wrinkles in the costume. Just beautiful.

Check in tomorrow for #95 in the count-down of my Top 100 favorite comic-book covers.

Jack Kirby Coffee Table Book Kickstarter!

Look at this:

jack

Jeremy Kirby (Jack’s grandson) is Kickstarter funding a Coffee-Table sized book of Jack Kirby photos, art and a never before seen by the public 96 page play Jack wrote called “the frog prince”. For those poor souls ignorant of the great Jack Kirby here is a tiny over view:

Jack Kirby is arguably the greatest comic-book artist of all time. He co-created the Marvel Universe…here is a partial list of characters: Thor, the Fantastic Four, Captain America, Silver Surfer, Dr.Doom, the Hulk, the original X-Men & Galactus. On his own and with other companies he did these (among others) – Kamandi, New Gods, Forever People, Mister Miracle & Captain Victory. He also designed (and did much of the art I believe) for the Thundarr the Barbarian cartoon.

As a life long fan of the man’s work I am absolutely getting in on the Kickstarter for this…at least at the $50.00 level.

Top 100 Comicbook Covers – #97

097-Secret Invasion-03-Gabriele Dell'Otto

Number 97:

Secret Invasion #3 (Marvel – 2008)

Cover art by Gabriele Dell’otto

Brian Michael Bendis’s epic Marvel Event “Secret Invasion” was a cool sci-fi mini-series (with a ton of tie-ins & cross-overs naturally) involving the alien Skrulls taking over earth by replacing many well-known super-heroes. Many of the covers featured art reminiscent of 50’s & 60’s sci-fi films and pulp magazines. I loved it. The cover to issue 3 by painter Gabriele Dell’otto is no exception. I love the upside-kiss pose. Spider-Woman’s hair flowing down and her hands/fingers are poking at him like a…well, like a spider. Iron Man has his visor up and he looks beaten/tired and ready to give in to her “attack”. The colors are striking and the logo is at once cool and over the top Roger Corman B Movie. This cover is perfection in comic art. How the heck did it get way down here at number #97???

Check back later today/tonight for #96 in the count-down of my favorite comic-book covers.
