002-Wolverine-64-Ron Garney

Number 02:

Wolverine #64 (Marvel – 2008)

Cover art by Ron Garney

Ron Garney back in the count-down at #02! This cover just rocks on so many fronts it’s crazy. You have this wonderfully sexy shot of Mystique armed to the teeth back-side to the camera…then you have the awesome red sky in the background that kind of helps spell out Wolverine’s anger. And finally you have Wolverine himself -blades out, shirtless, ripped pants & his face a wild grimace. A masterpiece!

Top 100 Comicbook Covers – #03

Click the cover below to load a super high-resolution 1315×2048 version:

003-Uncanny X-Men-143-Terry Austin

Number 03:

Uncanny X-Men #143 (Marvel – 1980)

Cover art by Terry Austin

At #3 it’s Terry Austin penciling and inking his own awesome art for the cover of Uncanny X-Men #143. I always loved Kitty Pryde and this cover really grabbed me when I first seen it as a kid and it still holds up really well. From the look on her face, the flashlight glare and of course the HR Giger inspired creature looming behind her it’s a powerful image.

Top 100 Comicbook Covers – #04

Click the cover below to load a high-resolution 1323×2048 version:

004-X-Force-09-Mike Choi

Number 04:

X-Force #9 (Marvel – 2008)

Cover art by Mike Choi & Sonia Oback

At #04 in the count-down is a wonderfully sexy and dark X-Force cover by the fantastic team of Choi and Oback. I love the way their art combines fine lines and lots of detail with a very clean slick computer animation look. It gleams AND BREATHES. Incidentally the gun enthusiast in me really appreciates Domino’s excellent trigger discipline here. I would almost guess that Mike Choi knows a little about guns or he got some good consultation as she does NOT have either finger on the trigger which is proper form for an experienced and smart gun-handler.

Check back tomorrow night for number #03 in the count-down of my Top 100 favorite comic book covers.
